Syracuse Bravest vs Finest Basketball Game 10/17/13

basket ballEvery great city is made up of people that think beyond themselves, go beyond expectations and act on the belief that leaving the world better than they found it is the right thing to do.  Our city of Syracuse is filled with folks like this – and next week some of those bravest and finest souls will show us how giving is better than receiving, and playing the game is more important than winning or losing.

Thursday, October 17, 7 PM, the Syracuse Police Department – the Bravest, and the Syracuse Fire Department – the Finest, will go head to head in a “friendly” basketball competition to be held at the Institute of Technology at Central Tech at 258 E. Adams St.  While these fine men and women are just amateurs athletes,  you can be assured of some fierce and competitive ball playing. Taking their moves to the court in an effort to raise money for Sheridan First Responder’s Park in Eastwood, your $2 donation will go towards the purchase of flags for that park.

Working along with the two groups is the Syracuse Parks Conservancy, a “citizen based organization that coordinates activities in the parks, raises funds for projects, repairs and improvements, recruits volunteers for events, and acts as a liaison with city government.” This non-profit organization comprised of volunteers, works with both public and private citizens and has completed projects large and small. Planting trees and bulbs, installing rain gardens and organizing Earth Day activities are just a few of their efforts.  The group is always looking for more volunteers especially in the areas of:

• Environment & EcologyFlag and fireman

• Planning, Design & Preservation

• Events & Tourism

• Finance & Administration

• Fundraising & Development

• External Affairs

• Volunteers

• Historical & Nominating

When defining what makes a city great urbanites and city planners might say, density, common green space, diversity or a dozen other factors that are often difficult to measure.  But what really makes a city great is the quality of its citizens;  their willingness to recognize where need is, act on eliminating that need, and showing up for work the next day — maybe with a few bruises and humbled egos, but showing up none-the-less.  Go Bravest and Finest– we’re rooting for you!

If you get to the game – please send us photos of your favorite team!
