Celebrate the Season at the Golden Harvest Festival

Though the summer weather is still here, every day it feels like fall is getting closer.  The crisp morning air and the smell of autumn on the breeze bring to mind the changing season.  The end of summer in Central New York is one of the most enjoyable times of the year.  This year I plan to celebrate the season at Beaver Lake’s Golden Harvest Festival.

The festival takes place during the second weekend of September (9/8-9/9).  There will be live jazz, blues, folk, bluegrass and other music all weekend.  Additional entertainment will include a magician (The Magic of Virgil), a comic juggler (Incredible Larry),  and puppet shows by the Catskill Puppet Theater.  If that’s not enough, there will also be a petting zoo, free crafts, free canoe paddling, face painting, games, hayrides, and scavenger hunts.

Funny contests are held throughout the weekend as well.  Dress up like a scarecrow and stuff your clothes with straw to compete in the “Living Scarecrow Contest”, or demonstrate your best animal sounds in the “Wild Critter Call” contest.  Like dessert?  Bring your appetite and compete in a pie eating contest for either children or adults.

The festival food will be sold by local groups.  The selections range from pizza to falafel to BBQ; with many fresh, seasonal items as well.

The Golden Harvest Festival is sure to be an affordable, fun weekend event.  Parking is free; and admission is only $5 for adults, $1 for children (6-17), and free for kids 5 and under!
