Ophelia’s Place / Cafe at 407

This past weekend I asked my dad if he’d like to go out to breakfast.  I was thinking we’d eat at the tried and true diner in our town, but my dad is always trying different things and thinking outside the box.  He suggested Ophelia’s Place, which I had never heard of.  When he told me about the mission behind the cafe I couldn’t wait to check it out.

He explained that the cafe (called Cafe at 407) helps to fund a non-profit organization for eating disorders.  In addition to supporting this much needed group, I also really enjoyed breakfast!  The cafe, located in the village of Liverpool, had a coffee house vibe with a fireplace, cozy armchairs and sofas, and eclectic tables and chairs.  The decor and music were mellow, creating a relaxed, down-to-earth type of energy.  Uplifting quotes were whimsically painted on the walls.  After ordering our breakfast at the counter, we found a comfy nook near the window and sipped on lattes in oversized mugs.  Our delicious breakfast burritos were brought to our table while we enjoyed quiet conversation; an experience much different than the diner.

Ophelia’s Place is a non-profit organization that was started in 2002 by two parents dedicated to helping their daughters recover from eating disorders.  Their mission is to “empower individuals, families, and communities to redefine beauty and health through initiatives that increase self-esteem, improve body image and introduce alternatives to dangerous desires for perfection; and to providing outreach, advocacy and educational services to those impacted by eating disorders, disordered eating and body dissatisfaction.”  Cafe at 407 was opened in 2009 to provide a community environment as well as funding for this noble mission.

The cafe has a community room and hosts weekly support groups for individuals with eating disorders and their families.  Moving Forward Women’s Support Group is a group dedicated to helping women with eating disorders.  The group focuses on discussion, journalizing, and  “revolutionizing”.  Meetings take place on Thursdays from 6 PM – 7:30 PM.   Family and Friends Support Group is an eight week series of support meetings to provide families with helpful resources.  The next session will begin sometime in September (check the website for more information).  Both groups are open and do not require registration or a reservation.  The community room is also available for other groups to use by request for a donation of $25 per hour.

Ophelia’s Place is also funded by special fundraising events.  Syracuse’s First Annual National Eating Disorder Walk will take place at Onondaga Lake Park on August 26th.  On September 9th, Limp Lizzard in Liverpool will host a walk, cycle or ride dinner to benefit the organization.  The 11th Annual Raise the Green 9 Hole Golf Tournament is scheduled for September 27th and includes 9 holes of golf, dinner, silent auction, raffle and more.

I’m so glad my dad suggested this place for breakfast…I’m sure I will go back!  This is a wonderful way to support our community – and I’d take the food and coffee over the diner’s any day.
