Coming Home to Central New York

I grew up in the Syracuse area.  I lived here until I graduated from college, at which point I really couldn’t wait to try something different.  I moved to Atlanta, GA for five years, and then to Orlando, FL for another five.  The south seemed so appealing after living so long in an area with such brutal winters.

Living away was undoubtedly an experience I needed. But something was always missing for me.  Every summer and every Christmas I spent hundreds of dollars to board my dogs and get an overpriced flight right back to Syracuse, NY.  Why would I want to leave the warm, sunny south on my only vacations to come back to freezing cold Syracuse?  It is and always will be home.  Not only is all of my family here, but so are my memories, and therefore my heart.

When my husband and I found out last year that we were expecting our first child, I knew there was no other place I wanted to be but home.  It took some convincing, but by the second trimester my husband agreed that Central New York would be the best place for us to start this new chapter of our lives.  In the midst of preparing for a new baby, we began to plan the big move.
This past May we closed on our house in Baldwinsville.  It wasn’t easy moving and starting new jobs with a new baby.  Honestly, this was probably the hardest year of my life.  But also the best.

I don’t regret moving away.  In fact, I don’t think I would have this appreciation for home had I not.  Sure, Atlanta has its charms, as does Orlando.  But instead of a brutal winter, you have an unbearable summer (not to mention no beautiful snow for the holidays, or skiing).   Even more importantly, this is a wonderful place to raise a family.  Just as I did, my children will be able to appreciate the beauty and excitement of every season.  They will be able to attend excellent public schools (a luxury we wouldn’t have had in the south).  I can’t wait to rediscover all that Central New York has to offer, and I’ve never been happier to call it “home sweet home.”

  1. It’s fun to travel but I always enjoy coming HOME to Syracuse. Yes, it snows. And, yes, Syracuse has freezing temperatures. But it has great seasons for just about anything and everything. Welcome back HOME!!

  2. I had a similar experience, moving away before I was married and again after, only to return home to Auburn when I was expecting my first child. This is where I felt at home and I couldn’t imagine traveling every holiday to be with my family. Welcome home and may you enjoy many happy years in CNY!

  3. I totally agree with Sarah. I lived in Michigan for several years before coming home to DeRuyter where I grew up. To me there is nothing better than being near family. Some friends come and go, but your family is always your family. My son that lives in Texas shares Sarah’s feeling about the summer heat. There are times he would like to return to central New York.
    Welcome back Sarah.

  4. I’ve never lived anywhere else except New York State. I’ve traveled quite a bit, both within the U.S. as well as internationally but am always glad to get back to Liverpool, NY.

Welcome back! Hope to see you at the Monday night meetings!

  5. Home is certainly where the heart is. I moved to California for nine years. It was beautiful and I saw so many California sites. I loved it. But in the end, I came back because Syracuse is where I was born and lived most of my life. I still don’t like the winter driving but the snow (looking at it from the living room window) is beautiful.

    Welcome back……
